PENETRATING LIQUIDS
The Penetrating Liquid method consists of detecting discontinuities exposed to the surface and to achieve this, first a preliminary cleaning is done on the surface of the component to be inspected by manual or mechanical means to remove paint, oxides, greases among other contaminants that may affect the inspection, to remove the remaining residues from the previous cleaning, it is finished by doing it with a solvent, leaving the surface suitable for the next step, applying a colored penetrating oil on the area of interest and leaving a certain time according to the temperature and type of material so that it can enter the discontinuities through capillarity.
Once this time is over, the excess of the penetrant is removed by means of a damp cloth, developer talc is applied by spraying over the entire surface and a final time is given for the colored oil found within the discontinuities come out to the surfaces and finally the evaluation of the indications found is carried out.
Some of the advantages offered by this method can be seen in the following list:
- It is an inexpensive test, since it does not require very sophisticated equipment for its correct performance.
- It is simple to do and this allows it to be applied almost anywhere.
- Speed of the process and the results are almost immediate.
- They can be made in many materials, even in materials that are not ferrous or metallic, only that they are not porous materials.
The process
Request for information on the component to be examined, such as: manufacturing drawings, material specification, design drawing, as well as installation safety conditions.
Application of the procedure of the non-destructive method for the detection of probable discontinuities in materials
Characterization and dimensioning of indications found to determine their acceptance or rejection in accordance with the applicable regulations.
